An oral crown, or dental crown, is a cap placed over your tooth to restore the appearance and function of your natural tooth. The oral crown will cover the entirety of the visible portion of your tooth.

Dental Crown Materials

Oral crowns are often made from porcelain, ceramic, composite resin, metal alloys, or a combination of materials. Since the purpose of the dental crown is to strengthen your tooth and restore its natural-looking appearance, your dentist will work closely with you to ensure that the color of the crown is matched to the rest of your teeth so that the crown will blend with the rest of your teeth and has the strength it needs to function effectively.

Dental Crown Procedure

Oral crowns are generally placed in your mouth during two dental visits. During your first visit, your dentist at Restorative and Implant Dentistry will prepare your tooth by removing any decay and enough tooth structure to ensure that the crown will fit over the tooth. After this, your dentist will take an impression of the tooth so that the crown will fit snugly on top of it. While the crown is getting made in the lab, you will be given a temporary crown. It usually takes less than two weeks to make the crown, and when it is ready, your dentist will cement the crown in place.
