When you have a severe toothache or some other kind of dental emergency, the dentists at Restorative and Implant Dentistry are available to provide a quick response. We handle different types of emergency dentistry issues. This includes:
Toothaches
If you have a severe toothache, it means that there is a dental issue. If you wait longer to seek treatment, the solution can become more complex and expensive. We suggest taking the following immediate measures in a dental emergency:
- Rinse your mouth using warm salt water.
- If there is swelling in your face, use a cold compress to get temporary relief.
Cracked, Broken, or Chipped Tooth
If you have a broken or damaged tooth, rinse the spot using warm water. Apply a cold compress over the area. If possible, recover any of the tooth fragments and carry them along to our office. It is recommended to save any tooth fragment and rinse it as well.
Knocked-Out Tooth
If you have a knocked-out tooth, recover it by holding it at the crown and not at the root. It is recommended to rinse it but avoid over-handling and over-cleaning.
- Use a clean piece of cloth or gauze to place and hold the tooth in its place, if possible
- If you are unable to reinsert the tooth, keep it in a cup of water or milk and bring along
- Avoid removing any hanging tissue
Damaged Braces & Wires
Damaged braces and wires are also dental emergencies and need immediate attention. If possible, push them into a position that doesn’t bother you. Else, use a cotton swab and leave the wire as such.
Orthodontic Injuries
If you have minor injuries, such as those caused by loose brackets, wires, or other orthodontic appliances, they may often be treated at home. However, if you have suffered trauma or injury to your mouth, face, teeth, or gums, and have unmanageable pain, discomfort, infection, or swelling, you should seek emergency dental care.
Abscesses, Canker Sores & Cold
Abscesses are severe infections that mostly occurs in the gumline around the infected tooth. These conditions require emergency dentistry care, failing which the infections can spread to other body parts. If there is severe pain and/or inflammation in the gums, you should immediately visit our dentist.
During a dental emergency, you may consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever for temporary relief before visiting our office. We suggest taking such medication as per directions.
