Gum grafting in Pompano Beach, FL

Gum Grafting and What are the different types of gum grafting?

Gum recession is a common dental issue that can lead to a variety of problems, including tooth sensitivity, root exposure, and even tooth loss if left untreated. Fortunately, gum grafting procedures offer an effective solution to restore gum tissue and protect dental health. Here, we explore the different types of gum grafting techniques available:

Connective tissue grafts: This is the most common type of gum grafting procedure. During this technique, a flap of skin is cut at the roof of the mouth, and tissue from underneath the flap, called subepithelial connective tissue, is removed and stitched to the gum tissue surrounding the exposed root.

Free gingival grafts: Similar to connective tissue grafts, free gingival grafts involve taking tissue from the roof of the mouth. However, instead of removing tissue from underneath a flap, a small amount of tissue is taken directly from the surface of the palate and attached to the gum area being treated.

Pedicle grafts: In this procedure, instead of taking tissue from the palate, tissue adjacent to the recession site is used. A flap of tissue is partially cut away from the gum near the exposed root and then stretched or rotated over the recession area and sewn into place.

Allograft: This technique involves using donor tissue instead of tissue from the patient’s own mouth. Allografts can be particularly beneficial for patients who do not have enough tissue available for traditional grafting methods.

Each type of gum grafting procedure offers unique benefits and may be recommended based on the individual patient’s needs and the extent of gum recession.
